29.10.2013. It’s done! Jazz Belgrade came to an end. With a great last performance Vijay Iyer made the Dom Omladine explode. What a great final that was! Before there was an excellent performance of piano player Julio Resende and Fado sensation Maria Joao. a complete review and more photo’s of all shows will follow soon. For now some images of the last night. Thanks Jazz Belgrade for 5 days of excellent music and a great atmosphere!
29 october 2013. 2 days ago Lou Reed passed away. Although he gained worldfame by the Velvet Underground and hits like “Walk on the wild side” and “Perfect day”, he also was experimenting in jazzmusic. Together with his friend John Zorn and his wife Laurie Anderson he performed live at the Jazz Middelheim Festival in Antwerp 2009. It was a night to remember. Despite the fact that photographers had only a few minutes and there were many restrictions, like only shooting from the side of the stage far away, I was fortunate to be able to shoot him and listen to this concert.
May he rest in peace.

24.10.2013. with an excellent performance of the Big Band RTS with Bert Joris and a good performance of Cassandra Wilson in a reasonably filled Sava Centre in the Serbian Capital Belgrade the 29th Jazz festival has started.
Bert Joris the Belgian composer and trumpet player made an excellent performance together with the most experienced big band in Serbia the Big Band RTS. It was like they played together for years so strong was the connection and the creativity between Joris and the big band. Joris played with passion and respect for his colleagues and musically it was exciting.
The 2nd part of the evening was for Cassandra Wilson and her band the Harriet Tubman Trio. The trio was named after a female Afro American activist fighting against slavery. It was therefor no big surprise that most of the songs were written and composed around this theme and during the concert many images and videos concerning slavery were shown on a large screen. The passion on freedom on fighting injustice could be read from the face of the bandmembers including Cassandra making the songs sometimes rough and straight from the heart. That made it a good show even when Wilson seemed to be tired (hopping off the stage after 5 songs) and gave much space to the band to perform in a great way with guitars like in a huge rockconcert. Not really jazzy but music straight from the heart song with passion and power. It shows the great skills of this artist even when not being in the best shape.
Met een eerste uitverkochte editie en een enthousiast publiek lijkt Eindhoven rijp voor een permanent jazzfestival op hoog niveau. de combinatie van de allerbeste jazzmuziek en een rijke keuze aan zowel beginnende als gearriveerde jazzartiesten maakt dat het de moeite waard is. Bij een jazzstad denk je niet direct aan Eindhoven, maar gelet op de grote drukte speelt dit geen rol, mensen kwamen vanuit de hele regio, Limburg en ook de Randstad. Bij de kleine zaal en het bovenfoyer leidde dit helaas bij een paar optredens aan het einde van de avond tot een lange rij wachtenden en een bordje dat oplichtte met de tekst “vol”. gelukkig had de organisatie hiervoor gewaarschuwd en waren de echte liefhebbers van bijvoorbeeld Snarky Puppy tijdig in de zaal.
Kijken we naar de programmering van het festival dan was dit absoluut prima. Grote namen en publiekstrekkers waren Gregory Porter (met stip!), Jose James en Joshua Redman. Meest opvallende ” nieuwe” naam was Chloe Charles de Canadese die met haar mooie verschijning en prachtige stem de luisteraars absoluut overtuigde. Daarnaast een uitstekende rol voor Tin Men and the Telephone die de beleving van muziek een andere draai gaf met hun gestileerde muziek op een tenniswedstrijd. Ten slotte een dik compliment voor rapper Fresku die lijkt te zingen rechtstreeks uit het hart waarbij alle rauwheid en boosheid echt leken. Qua jazz een overtuigende rol voor Vloeimans en zijn gatecrash (Eric kan alles met een trompet) en Joshua Redman die alles gaf en terecht overwon. Een topavond in Eindhoven. 13.10.2013. Hierbij alvast de eerste beelden van het So What’s Next? festival in Eindhoven gisteren. Meer foto’s en een uitgebreid verslag volgen.
Alweer even terug, maar hier alsnog enkele beelden van Laren Jazz. Door omstandigheden wat minder dan normaal maar toch de moeite waard om even terug te kijken naar Laren Jazz met de fenomenale Fay Claassen, de altijd uitstekende Peter Beets en de zeer vermakelijke Mike Boddé.
